Hi Ted

Sounds like Easter Island was not your favorite place. However, the city of Pasadena has a reading program for adults called "Pasadena, One City, One Story." The public library buys multiple copies of a book, and then holds discussions each couple of months. This month's story is a novel about two women on Easter Island, one in 1913 and one in 1973. One is studying the old writing on the wooden tablets, the other is studying ancient pollen cores to find out what type of trees were originally on Easter Island. It is rather melodramatic, but if you like novels, it is a fun story and made Easter Island come alive for me. Maybe you saw the book while you were there. It is called "Easter Island," and the author is Jennifer Vanderbes (sounds like an Afrikaans' name but she is from the US - a graduate of Yale and the Iowa Writer's Workshop).

Did you ever get the books about Africa? I sent Elizabeth the citations.
I think they are better than this book about Easter Island, especially the "Story Like the Wind" pair - among our favorites ever.

Love to all,

Susan

PS We are following Obama's progress avidly and will vote on Super Tuesday this week!
